Son of Henry Deringer Sr. In Man at Arms of 1984 it is reported that Henry Deringer Jr. was born on October 6, 1786. Other records says he was born in Easton, Pennsylvania on October 26, 1786, died in February 1869. He is buried at the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia. Henry Jr. had two sons, Henry III and Benjamin. Henry III died in infancy. Benjamin inherited his father's business in 1868. Deringer began his career as an apprentice to a firearms maker in Richmond, Va. He worked for the Virginia Manufactory from November 1807 to October 1808, Richmond as Nippes, Ritchie, Steinman, Watt and Winner too. They bedame the backbone of the new arms manufacturing. The Secretary of War, Mr. Coxe wrote on October 2, 1808 "You will observe that the Virginia Armory has operated as a school, & that the present contracts of the U.S. prevent the benefits of it from being lost. In 1806 he settled in Philadelphia and began his own arms-manufacturing plant. An old advertisements indicates that he or his father hold the Philadelphia Rifle Manufactory American gunsmith who was the inventor of the Derringer pistol. He would have manufactured about 1200 1842 Model pistols. Government purchase probable The 1860 censussaid that he had 4 hands employed at $120/month. During the business year ending mid 1860 he would have purchased 100 gun barrels, iron and steel forgings, stocks, German silver, silver and gold in the amount of $600 and produced 500 pairs of pistols valued $5500.
